The Birth Rites Collection held two symposia to explore the visual representations of childbirth. The symposia introduced the Birth Rites Collection and discussed the social, political and artistic implications of work around the subject of childbirth in contemporary art.
The symposium coincided with the Mary Kelly retrospective at The Whitworth. The day was rounded off with an evening reception at Salford University Midwifery Department to present the old and new acquisitions and films.

We gathered artists, academics and curators to discuss the social, political and artistic implications of work around the subject of childbirth in contemporary art. The symposium coincided with the Mary Kelly retrospective at The Whitworth.
